It’s becoming increasingly clear that the battle against climate change will be won or lost in cities. Urban centres account for roughly 75 percent of the world´s global energy consumption, and for 80 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. City administrators are taking note of their important role in environmental and climate protection. This is also one of the results of a survey Siemens conducted together with the U.S. Conference of Mayors, whose 1,200 members make it one of the most important associations in the United States. The city leaders were asked about the infrastructure challenges they are facing today. Initial results show that green technologies are playing an ever greater role. Another research project sponsored by Siemens focuses specifically on technological levers that could help London to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, water usage and waste disposal by 2025. A second study for Munich shows paths toward a carbon-free future.
